Innsbruck – the Austrian Winter Capital

Located in Western Austria, Tyrol is the heartland of the Austrian Alps and Innsbruck is the main town. Populated since Roman times, Innsbruck has a rich history and excellent conditions for skiing in winter and mountaineering in summer. Thus, along with the beautiful town centre, the friendly ambience and the extensive sport facilities, Innsbruck has earned the reputation of a major tourist destination.

Finding an Innsbruck hotel is not a difficult task – tourism is the most important source of income for the city authority. At first glance, the geographical location of the town may suggest that this is a distant and remote place, but in reality, the connections with Verona in Italy and Munich in Germany are provided with comfortable highway access. Innsbruck has one of the busiest railway stations in Austria and a highly developed tram system.

Internationally renowned winter spots centre, Innsbruck hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics and the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. It is to host the 1st Winter Youth Olympics in 2012. There are several ski resorts around the town, including Nordkette and Stubai Valley among others. The glaciated terrain in the latter makes skiing possible even in summer months. Innsbruck organizes a number of popular sport events. One of them is the Four Hills Tournament - annual ski jumping events, part of the World Cup.

Relatively small town, Innsbruck has a surprisingly rich history. Imperial residence in the past, the presence of the state authority left richly decorated town centre with beautiful cathedral, a castle and many museums. The Armoury contains a significant number of arms and armour, fine example of the Renaissance warfare.

Be welcome any time to the Innsbruck hotels – for a summertime mountain hike or for a crazy snowboard trip during winter.
