London has been home to some of the most famous painters in the world, and some of those painters gained notoriety by the deftness of their brushwork in capturing and conveying a sense of atmosphere in the scenes they painted. This was not accomplished overnight and many of the painters returned time and time again to their favorite locations hoping someday to get it just right. Monet was one such painter and he was one of the first to decide that the atmosphere in which a setting lay was as important as the subject itself.
