Nightlife – A Guide to Parisian Pubs.

If it's one thing Parisian bars do well, it's capturing that exciting, yet elusive bohemian vibrancy that make them such compelling places to spend an evening. In reality all it takes is for a joint to play good music, sell reasonably priced drinks and have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Sadly this simple concept is one that is fast being lost in most major cities, but there are a few little gems still clinging on in Paris. Here are just a few:

Le Requin Chagrin, or the 'depressed shark' is a great little dive bar packed with the usual suspects of students, intellectuals and professional barflies all in the midst of deep and heated discussion with one another. A great place for the beer guzzler among you, with ten on tap to choose from and a happy hour from 4 – 9 making the average price for one around €2.50. A few minutes walk from the Metro, Place Monge. You'll find it hugging the corner of rue Mouffetard.

Les Pères Populaires might just be the cheapest bar in Paris, with a glass of wine setting you back a mere €2, a beer around €2.40 and it's speciality flavoured rum only €4 for a generous measure. At the atmosphere and interior is by no stretch of the imagination contrived, but rather an organic reflection of it's unique character. Free Wifi makes it a hangout for young creatives in the daytime, while at night DJ's play a set that is unpretentious and unobtrusive. Open to 2am, the nearest Metro station is Buzenval and you find the bar on the same side as the exit.

One for the sunny days along the Canal de l'Ourcq, Bar Ourcq is drippingly cool embankment bar hugging the shoreline with it's deckchairs. While the cosy cabin interior is will keep you warm on those biting winter evenings. A glass of wine starts at €2.50, while you can fill on up a decent meal for under a tenner. Talk to the landlord and it can also serve as a reception for probably coolest of summer Paris wedding venues. The address is - 68 quai de la Loire. Why not try and arrive by boat?
